WIP Wednesday - A Gift for A Wonderful Teacher

I can't believe it's already time to think about end-of-year gifts.  I was inspired to volunteer to make a quilt for my older son's teacher after seeing a wonderful quilt by Lee @ Freshly Pieced.  She had all of the kids in the class draw pictures of themselves and then uploaded them to Spoonflower.  It was such a cute idea I wanted to try something similar for our teacher.  So, here's the Spoonflower fabric.  Cute, right?

Now, I just needed a pattern.  I've been eyeing this hexagon log cabin tutorial for a while on Sewing Chick's blog.  It seemed like the perfect way to highlight the kids' self portraits. Here's her finished product - so adorable!!

Hexagon Quilt Top

I've decided to use bright, rainbow colors.  I think I need 32 hexagons for a lap size quilt, and I've got seven done so far - I need to get busy! I'm trying to make it entirely scrappy, but my scrap bins aren't as plentiful as some of you, so I'm also raiding the scrap bins of some of my friends who are willing to share - now that's what I call a good friend!

The last day of school is June 6th, so I've got time, but I don't want this one to go down to the wire.  Here's are a few pics in progress - more to come soon!

Exciting News!

Today, I'm really excited to share some news with you - I have a project featured at Moda's Bakeshop.  This is such a neat day because when I first started quilting, the Bakeshop was a source of such inspiration to me - it's a wonderful resource of free patterns from some of the best designers and bloggers out there. I'm looking forward to sharing lots of projects with you in the future.

This first project builds off of a quilt I made last month - and I thought it would make a perfect throw pillow as well.  The tutorial is up on the Bakeshop today, please go check it out.  And, I'd love for you to come back to my blog and visit again soon!

Oh, the Places You'll Go!

I can't even remember the last time I had a Friday Finish.  I guess that's what happens when you are stuck at home all week with a little one who is sick.

I'm finally putting this quilt to rest - it's all set to go to a sweet little girl due to arrive in late June along with the Dr. Seuss classic book.

Here are the details:
Fabric: Oh, The Places You Will Go! Fat Quarter Bundle
purchased from Fat Quarter Shop - coordinating back and binding.
Pattern: adapted from Rachel Griffith's Pinwheel Sampler

W.I.P. Wednesday

I haven't done a WIP Wednesday lately - mainly because I've had so many little projects going on, but today I'm home with a sick child so I've got a little extra computer time.  So, here's what's on my design wall this week:

1. Cartwheels Quilt made from baby clothes.  This is for my friend Amy who wanted to make a quilt from her daughter's baby clothes.  I am finally done with the blocks and will be adding sashing/borders next. I just love how bright and cheery this is going to be.  I see the end in sight on this one.

Background - Apple Jacks in Gray
Blocks - various baby outfits

2.  Rainbow Mini - here's another Craftsy mini I've been working on designed by Janice from Better off Thread - need to make some decisions regarding embellishments and quilting, so I may tackle this after Cartwheels is done - I need a step back before I decide.

Mosaic Inspiration

I've needed a little inspiration and this contest at Stitched in Color might be just the kick I need.  Lark Cottons is hosting a contest where you create a mosaic from their available fabrics. This is what I've come up with.

Next year, I want to enter a quilt in our local quilt show. I've been working on color palettes and for some reason navy blue keeps coming back to me.  Also, I'm a sucker for all things orange as well and there are so many fabulous oranges out there.  I am also fascinated by the low volume prints out there and wanted to mix bold blues and oranges with the low volume subtle prints available as well.

I've posted my mosaic - the winner will win a FQ bundle of their own mosaic - isn't that exciting.  The voting starts on April 30th so I will let you know when you can vote for my creation - I hope you like it as much as I do!

A Good Home (and Giveaway Winner Announced)

One of the reasons I started quilting was because I wanted to be able to to give handmade gifts to people I love.  It gives me the greatest joy.  Today, this quilt found a home.

This is the quilt I made for the Charm Madness Blog Hop at Sew Lux Fabrics.  It didn't have an intended home when I was making it but now it does. A wonderful friend is adopting a 2-year-old girl next week.  I wanted her to have something to provide her comfort in this time of transition. She is joining an older brother and sister and I couldn't be more excited for her.  When I gave this to her new dad, he was really touched and told me that these were the exact colors of her new room.  It was fate!  I've had a smile on all day just thinking about this new family.

In other news, I've got a winner to announce from last weeks April Showers Mug Rug blog hop.

I've contacted her to ask about her favorite colors etc. and will be putting something together for her very soon.  Thanks everyone for participating in the April Showers Blog Hop - it was so much fun!

The other quilty project I've been working on this week is this mini quilt - I found it on Craftsy for $3.00 - I saw the original at QuiltCon and just loved it.  In fact, I used the free charm packs of Lizzie House's Pearl Bracelets that I got at QuiltCon to make it, so I might just name this QuiltCon...I'm contemplating something in the middle - possibly appliqué.  I think the back will be pieced as well since it's a small quilt - I've got leftover charms that I'd like to play with. But here's where it stands as of last night.  This is my first use of a text print as a background.  It is a little busier than what I would normally choose, but I think it does provide an interesting twist.

Happy weekend to you all - I hope the weather is as gorgeous where you are as it is here in Austin, TX!

Get Your Hex On! ~ an available slot!

Some of you may be new to my blog, so I wanted to introduce you to my fun little project I've been working on this year ~ I started an online bee called Get Your Hex On!! It's a fun venue for hexie lovers, like me (and you) to get together and create some fabulous projects.
Get Your Hex On

We have three "hives" of 12 going now.  I've had one of the bees drop out due to work commitments (don't I know how that feels!) and so we have one slot open - this hive just started so you can slide right in.

All of the detail you need can be found on our Flickr page.

If you are interested, please email me at {thetiltedquilt at gmail dot com}.  This slot will be given on a first-come, first-served basis.  Any additional interested folks will be placed on a waiting list in case we have other slots open. You must have a Flickr account

Here's a preview of what we've been working on - this has been so much fun :)

Today, I've decided to give you my take on a little more grownup mug rug... like, um, a cocktail mug!

I wondered how I could link up one of my favorite pastimes with our theme for the hop and suddenly the phrase, "When it rains, I pour!" came to mind.

From there,  I went to my favorite embroidery site, Urban Threads and found two perfect designs for this project, the umbrella and the martini glass :)

We have had lots of rain here over the last week or so, I think that calls for a glass of wine, or maybe even a martini... Don't you?

I used a piping technique I learned in a Piping Hot Binding class from the fabulous Susan Cleveland to make the piping for a little extra punch.  She has a great tool to help with making perfect piping every time! She has a couple of YouTube videos that show her technique, check her out.

And now for some giveaway fun ~ it will be a mystery fabric giveaway from my stash.  I'm going to put together a fun little care package of fabric for one winner. The giveaway will be open through the entire hop, so don't forget to enter for a chance to win!
